Reframe the activity tracker through the lens of positive design.
Project duration- 5 weeks
concept
An Audio-Visual guided app that promotes users to meditate and exercise for their overall well-being.
USER RESEARCH AND FINDINGS
I started by interviewing target users to identify opportunities for design. I asked them about their experiences with exercising, What they love about it, why is motivation lacking? etc. From these questions, I was able to obtain a few insights.
key findings
People felt greater joy exercising when they were amidst nature.
Their mental health was at a better state when they exercised though they didn’t think about it.
Motivation has to come from oneself.
Some people were unaware of the benefits of a complete exercise routine.
When they relaxed and worked on the cool-down part of the exercise they felt a sense of perfect completion.
User persona and Ideation
From the key findings, I created Personas and Scenario. That helped me to think of design principles, concepts for my users and come up with 'How might we?' questions to tackle the problem.
Low-Fi prototype
I sketched out my initial idea on paper.
From the key findings, I wanted nature to be a main part of the solution. It starts with users selecting the park based on their convenience and time. They will then press begin exercise. They will be guided throughout their journey starting with warm-up and running towards the park in their own time.
When they reach the park they will be guided to cool down and meditate. In the last minute of the routine, they will be asked to think of things they are grateful for that day. They will then be guided back to their starting location completing the routine. upon completion, they will be rewarded with life points.
There was a game aspect in the app where there is a character who will explore the land uncovering new objects. The character's progress is based on the user's workout routine and his life points.
User testing and peer review
To understand the impact of guided workout, I tested it out by being on call with one of the users and continuously trying to create the experience. I received valuable feedback like, the whole experience was comforting. Few issues were that the life points, in the end, would put users in a competitive setting taking away the joy of exercising.
Iteration and testing
I did multiple iterations based on user feedback. I found an easier way for the user to be motivated to exercise instead of the life points idea I initially had. I decided to do that by informing users of all the benefits they gained by working out for that day. I also included a positive quote when they open the app to help them make that decision in that split second of time.
I worked on the Mid-fi prototype and looked at all the aspects of the app.
I was trying to explore the UI with various color palettes, tried to play with bold colors
When I tested it out, I found that the colors were too strong for some users. The idea of the app being relaxing and mindful wasn't coming across.
Final design
Sign-up page and the motivational quote page to give that extra push for users to make the decision of exercising
Users select the park based on their interest and a workout page that informs them of the exercise structure.
When users finish the workout they come across a completion page that provides positive outcomes from the exercise. When users decide to end the workout, they see the end page.
The Triskelion page shows their achievements and the meditation page gives them access to the guided meditation.
